What Is Liquidation in Crypto Futures?

Understand crypto futures liquidation price, mark price, maintenance margin, leverage, bankruptcy price, and why exchange estimates differ.

Liquidation is the exchange-managed closing process that begins when a leveraged position or margin account no longer has enough equity to meet its maintenance requirement. The displayed liquidation price is a useful warning line, but the actual trigger depends on the contract, margin mode, risk tier, fees, funding, and account state.

Liquidation is an automatic risk close

You put up margin to control a larger position. If the trade loses so much that the remaining margin is no longer enough to keep the position open, the exchange steps in and starts closing it. That process is liquidation.

What actually triggers liquidation?

A leveraged position is supported by collateral. When the market moves against the position, unrealized loss reduces the equity that remains available. The exchange compares that equity with maintenance margin—the minimum amount required to keep the exposure open.

For isolated margin, the test is mostly position-level: the margin assigned to that position must cover its loss and maintenance requirement. For cross margin, the test is account-level: shared equity, other open positions, reserved margin, and unrealized PnL can all change the result.

Liquidation normally begins when the relevant margin balance reaches the maintenance threshold. The exchange may then cancel orders, reduce the position, or transfer it to a liquidation engine. The exact sequence is exchange-specific.

Mark price, last price, and bankruptcy price

The last traded price is the most recent execution in the order book. It is useful for charting and may be used for unrealized PnL displays, but it is not usually the liquidation trigger.

The mark price is a fair-value reference built from index and market inputs. Exchanges use it to reduce liquidations caused by a brief wick or a thin order book. That is why a chart can appear not to touch the liquidation line even though the risk engine has already acted.

Bankruptcy price is different again. It represents the price where the position margin is exhausted. Liquidation generally starts before that point so the exchange has room to close the exposure and protect the insurance or backstop system.

The inputs that move a liquidation price

Leverage is only one input. A useful estimate also needs the position notional, maintenance margin schedule, maintenance deduction, estimated closing fee, extra isolated margin, and—under cross margin—the collateral shared by the account.

Worked isolated-margin example

Consider a simplified 1 BTC USDT-margined long opened at $20,000 with 50x leverage. Assume a 0.5% maintenance margin rate, no maintenance deduction, no extra margin, and ignore closing fees for this example.

Initial margin is $400. Maintenance margin is $100. The position can absorb $300 of loss before reaching the maintenance requirement, placing the simplified liquidation estimate at $19,700.

Why your calculator and exchange may disagree

A difference does not automatically mean either number is wrong. The exchange has information an independent calculator may not have: your exact fee tier, open-order margin, portfolio offsets, funding already settled, contract precision, and the latest risk-engine configuration.

Use a calculator to compare scenarios before a trade and to understand which input changes the risk. Once a position is open, treat the exchange position panel and account maintenance ratio as authoritative.

Does higher leverage always move liquidation closer?

For the same isolated position notional, higher leverage means less initial margin and normally places liquidation closer to entry. Cross-margin behavior can also depend on shared account equity.

Can a stop-loss prevent liquidation?

A stop-loss can reduce risk, but it is not guaranteed. Trigger price, slippage, gaps, liquidity, and the difference between mark and last price can still allow liquidation to occur first.

Can funding cause liquidation?

Yes. When funding is deducted from isolated margin or cross-account equity, it reduces the collateral buffer and can move the account closer to maintenance requirements.

Is liquidation price the maximum amount I can lose?

Not necessarily. The final outcome depends on execution, margin mode, insurance mechanisms, and exchange rules. Under cross margin, more account collateral may be exposed than the margin initially associated with one position.
